Music was my first love.

From a tender age, I was enveloped in a world of melodies that shaped my very being. Growing up surrounded by the timeless compositions of Beethoven and the enchanting sounds of Louis Armstrong, I was introduced to the magic of music long before I could truly understand its depth. Django Reinhardt's revolutionary jazz guitar riffs resonated deeply with me, stirring a passion that would blossom like a flower in spring.

In those formative years, my excitement for music truly flourished when I received a transistor radio. This small device became my gateway to the exhilarating realms of pop and rock, genres that spoke directly to the heart of a young dreamer. With each turn of the dial, I discovered an eclectic mix of sounds and rhythms that ignited my imagination and filled my days with a vibrant tapestry of creativity.

Growing up in the town of Hilversum in the Netherlands, born in 1960, I was situated in a place steeped in musical heritage. Hilversum, known as the home of Dutch broadcasting, was a hub of creativity and innovation. I remember the days of limited television: with merely two channels available to us, one of which was broadcast from an old oil rig in the North Sea, our options were scarce but somehow cherished. Yet, as I grew older, our viewing landscape expanded to include German and Belgian television, gifting me occasional glimpses of international artists and ideas.

What made Hilversum truly special, however, were the rich musical resources at my doorstep. The famous Wisseloord recording studios stood proudly in our town, heralded for their brilliant acoustics. Philips, the pioneer of sound technology, dedicated immense efforts to ensure that music recorded within those walls achieved unparalleled clarity and depth. Remarkably, my father’s colleagues at Philips played a part in its inception, threading my family history into the very fabric of the town's musical legacy.

As I wandered the streets of Hilversum, I often felt a thrilling connection to the essence of music that reverberated throughout the town. All the major radio broadcasters operated their radio and television studios nearby, creating a fulfilling environment that nurtured both aspiring and established artists. It was a time when the air was thick with the promise of something greater, a time when musicians poured their hearts into their craft, and every melody seemed like a secret waiting to be discovered.

In retrospect, those early influences shaped my journey in ways I am only beginning to understand. Each note I listened to, every song that captured my attention, became a building block in my burgeoning appreciation for music. Those experiences forged a lifelong bond with sound that would forever be my guiding star.
